Myrtle's History

Myrtle is a Thames lighter or dumb barge i.e she never had an engine, but was just towed around. She was probably used for holding gravel. If I understand it correctly, her fore and aft holds would have been filled with water, and then, as the gravel was added the water would flow out. The remains of the pipes are still there in the holds, and the walls have been lined with a thin layer of concrete in the past.

She's due on Wednesday!

M'sM and M'sD have done it .. 1013S now belongs to M'sD!  At present she is called Redwood, but I'm not sure that she will keep that name.
Here is a picture of her out of water with her gantries still attached (they have been removed now)
There were pieces of metal where she is to lie left from work on Myrtle, so they were dug out of the very glutinous mud by a very strong man...

Now we have to mark the channel so that the tow-boat can find the way in ..

and then we have to hope for good weather ... forecast good at moment except that high pressure so lower tide height, and low winds .. also look ok at present.
Then we have to hope that all goes smoothly so that we don't have to leave her somewhere peculiar because we haven't managed to get her in far enough ..
